In October, unemployment rate was at 5.2%

The unemployment rate  in October 2013 was estimated at 5.2% for the set of the six Metropolitan Areas investigated and did not post a statistically relevant change neither in relation to September (5.4%) nor over October last year (5.3%). The unemployed population (1.3 million persons) was also stable in both comparisons. Likewise, the employed population (23.3 million persons) posted stability in both comparisons. The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector (11.9 million) did not change in relation to September and increased 3.6% in relation to October 2012.  The employed persons’ real average income usually earned (R$ 1,917.30) was considered statistically stable over September (R$ 1,919.82) and rose 1.8% in relation to October 2012 (R$ 1,883.45). The volume of the real average income usually earned by employed persons was estimated at R$ 45.1 billion in October 2013, holding steady in relation to last September and increasing 1.4% in relation to October last year. The employed persons’ volume of the effective real average income (R$ 45.0 billion last September grew 0.5% over August 2013 (R$ 44.8 billion) and increased 1.2% compared to September 2012 (R$ 44.5 billion).

In terms of areas, in the monthly analysis, the unemployment rate remained stable in the six Metropolitan Areas. On the other hand, in relation to October 2012, the rate had significant changes in Salvador (rose from 7.0% to 9.1%) and in Porto Alegre (fell from 3.9% to 3.0%), where it reached the lowest value in the time series started in March 2002.

The amount of the unemployed over September did not register considerable changes in any of the investigated areas. In relation to October 2012, there was a high in Salvador (33.5%), a fall in Porto Alegre (23.4%) and stability in the other Metropolitan Areas surveyed.

Employed population stable in all MAs but Belo Horizonte

The employed population recorded significant changes just in the Metropolitan Area of Belo Horizonte, where the contingent rose 1.4% in the month and fell 2.5% in the year.

By groups of activity, from September to October 2013, for the six areas as a whole, the employed population had a notable change just in Trade: a high of 3.9%. In the comparison with October 2012, there was decrease in Domestic services (-8.4%), whereas the other groups did not post statistically relevant moves.

In October, the level of employment (proportion of employed people in relation to people in working age) was estimated at 54.2% for the total of the six investigated areas, being stable in relation to September, but falling 0.8 pp in comparison with October 2012 (55.0%).  Almost all Metropolitan Areas held steady in the monthly comparison, except Belo Horizonte (an increase of 0.9 pp). Over October 2012, there was decrease in Belo Horizonte (-1.7 percentage points) and there were not significant changes in the other regions.

Income from Domestic Services rose 8.1% in relation to October 2012

 In the analysis by area, in relation to last September, the workers’ average real income usually earned increased in the Metropolitan Areas of Porto Alegre (1.9%) and São Paulo (1.1%). There was contraction in Salvador (-4.0%), Belo Horizonte (-1.3%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.2%) and Recife (-1.0%). In relation to October 2012, there was increase in Porto Alegre (5.6%), Rio de Janeiro (4.6%) and in São Paulo (1.5%). There was stability in Belo Horizonte and decrease in Salvador (-5.5%) and Recife (-2.5%).

As to the income by groups of activity, the highest increase in the comparison by month occurred in Construction (4.7%) and the biggest drop in Education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security (2.3%). In the annual comparison, Domestic services had the highest increase (8.1%) and the greatest contraction occurred in Services rendered to enterprises, rentals, real estate activities and financial intermediation  (- 2.5%).

Conversely, in the classification by employment type, over the previous month, the highest increase in the real average income usually earned was for self-employed workers (2.1%) and the biggest decrease, among workers without a record card (-2.5%).  In the annual comparison, the biggest rise was for workers without a record card in the private sector (6.1%) and the lowest, among the military and civil servants (1.7%).
