In April, unemployment rate was 8.9%

The unemployment rate remained practically stable, since there were no statistically significant changes compared to March 2009 (9.0%) and April 2008 (8.5%). The average real income usually earned by workers (R$ 1,318.40) decreased (-0.7%) in the monthly comparison and rose 3.2% compared to April 2008.

 

The employed population (20.913 million) did not have statistically significant changes in relation to March 2009 (20.953 million) or April 2008 (20.863 million). The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector (9.413 million) did not change significantly either, when compared to the figures in March 2009 (9.332 million) or April 2008 (9.233 million).

 

The employed population (2.046 million) also remained stable when compared to March 2009 (2.082 million) and April 2008 (1.948 million). The volume of real income usually earned by the employed population (R$ 27.9 billion) decreased (- 0.7%) in the monthly comparison and increased 3.7% in relation to April 2008.

 

In April 2009, the estimated unemployment rate was 8.9%, relative to the group of six metropolitan areas covered by the survey. The rate has remained stable in comparison with the figures in March 2009 (9.0%) and in April last year (8.5%).

 In April 2009 there were 2.046 million unemployed persons in the six metropolitan areas surveyed by PME. This number remained stable both compared to March 2009 (2.082 million), and to April 2008 (1.948 million). By area, there was no change in relation to the previous month. Compared to April 2008, there was increase in the metropolitan area of Recife (18.8%).

  

 

EMPLOYED PERSONS (PO)

 

The number of employed persons in April 2009 in the six metropolitan areas (20,913) did not change in relation to the previous month (20,953) or to April 2008 (20,863 million). By area, there was stability in both comparisons.  

 

In April 2009, men accounted for 55.4% of the employed population, whereas women, for 44.6%. The population at 25-49 years of age represented 62.8% of the total number of employed persons. The survey also showed that the percentage of employed persons with 11 or more years of schooling was 57.6%.

 

Results in relation to the main groups of activity

 

Mining and quarrying industry , manufacturing industry and distribution of electricity, gas and water

(16.4% of the PO). There was no change in either period analyzed. In the analysis by area, there was no change in the monthly comparison, but decrease in Belo Horizonte (8.6%), compared to April 2008.

 

Construction (7.3% of the PO) In the group of six metropolitan areas, there was stability in both periods of comparison. In the analysis by area, there was no change in relation to last March. Compared to April, there was increase in Salvador (15.0%).

 

Trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail trade of fuels (19.4% of the PO) In the group of six metropolitan areas, there was stability in both comparisons. In the analysis by area, there was decrease in relation to Porto Alegre (5.1%). Compared to results in April, there was increase in Recife (9.9%).

 

Services rendered to enterprises, rents, real estate activities and financial mediation (15.2% of the PO) In the group of six metropolitan areas, there was stability in both periods analyzed. In the analysis by area, there were no changes in either period analyzed.

 

Education, health, social services, general government and social security (16.1% of the PO) In the group of six areas surveyed, in both periods of comparison, there was stability.

 

In the analysis by area, there was no change in the number of employed persons in the monthly and annual comparison.

 

Domestic services (7.9% of the PO) There was stability in both periods analyzed. In the analysis by area, there was no change in this figure, in either period of comparison.

 

Other services (lodging and feeding, transportation, storage and communication, urban cleaning, associative, recreational, cultural and sports activities and personal services) (17.1% of the PO) There was stability both in the monthly and in the annual comparison. In the analysis by area, there was stability in

Porto Alegre (9.0%). Compared to April 2008, there were no changes.

 

 

Analysis of the type of participation of workers in the job market

 

Workers WITH a formal contract in the private sector (except domestic workers, military and other civil servants) (45.0% of the PO). There was stability in both periods analyzed. In the analysis by area, in the monthly comparison, there was stability. Compared to April 2008, there was increase in Recife (7.8%), Salvador (6.5%) and Belo Horizonte (5.4%).

 

Workers WITHOUT a formal contract in the private sector (except domestic workers, military and other civil servants) (12.5% of the PO) There was stability in the monthly and annual comparison. By area, there was stability in relation to march. In the annual comparison, there was decline in Belo Horizonte (10.9%).

Military or civil servants (7.6% of the PO) There was decline in the six metropolitan areas in relation to last march and stability in relation to April 2008. By area, there were decreases in Rio de Janeiro, compared to results in March (8.2%). Compared to April, there were no changes.

 

Own-account workers (18.6% of the PO) There was stability in both periods analyzed. The same was observed in the analysis by area.

 

AVERAGE REAL INCOME               

 

The survey estimated in the month of April 2009, in the group of six metropolitan areas, real average income usually earned by workers of R$ 1,318.40, with decrease of 0.7% compared to March. Compared to April 2008, there was recovery, of 3.2%.

In the analysis by area, in relation to the previous month, there was increase of income in the metropolitan areas of Recife (4.4%), of Rio de Janeiro (0.5%) and Porto Alegre (0.6%). Income decreased in Salvador (0.6%), Belo Horizonte (1.8%) and São Paulo (2.0%). In the annual comparison, there was increase in five areas: Salvador (7.1%), Belo Horizonte (3.0%), Rio de Janeiro (4.1%), São Paulo (2.8%) and Porto Alegre (3.7%). There was decrease of income in Recife (5.1%).

 

Income by categories of position in the occupation – MONTHLY comparison

 

In the group of six metropolitan areas, the results were:

 

Workers with a formal contract in the private sector (R$ 1,255.10) Decrease of 1.0% in April 2009. 

There was increase of income in the metropolitan areas of Recife (2.7%), Salvador (2.1%) Rio de Janeiro (1.9%) and Porto Alegre (1.3%). Decrease was observed in Belo Horizonte (3.4%) and São Paulo (2.9%).                       

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       

Workers without a formal contract in the private sector  (R$ 832.80) There was decrease by 4.4% in April 2009. There were increases of income in Recife (3.8%), Belo Horizonte (3.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (4.4%). There was decrease in Salvador (4.8%) and São Paulo (9.6%) and stability in Porto Alegre.

 

Military or civil servants (R$ 2,297.10)  There was stability in April 2009. There was increase of income in Recife (10.1%), Belo Horizonte (3.8%), São Paulo (6.8%) and Porto Alegre (1.0%). There was decrease in Salvador (14.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (5.4%).

 

Own-account workers (R$ 1,088.80) There was decrease of 1.7% in April 2009. There was decrease of income in Recife (11.6%), Belo Horizonte (6.2%) and São Paulo (4.7%). Income increased in the metropolitan areas of Salvador (4.8%), Rio de Janeiro (4.4%) and Porto Alegre (1.9%).

 

Income by categories of position in the occupation – ANNUAL comparison

 

For the group of six metropolitan areas, the results were: 

 

Workers with a formal contract in the private sector  There was increase of 4.1% in relation to April  2008 and increases in Recife (7.2%), Salvador (6.1%), Belo Horizonte (2.7%), Rio de Janeiro (11.8%), São Paulo (1.5%) and Porto Alegre (2.3%).

 

Workers without a formal contract in the private sector  There was recovery of 2.0% in relation to April 2008. In Recife (1.9%), Belo Horizonte (11.6%), Rio de Janeiro (9.8%) and Porto Alegre (6.9%) there was increase of income. Decrease was observed in São Paulo (3.9%), and stability in Salvador.

 

Military or civil servants There was increase of 5.6% in relation to April 2008, and increase of income in Belo Horizonte (3.1%), Rio de Janeiro (12.8%), São Paulo (4.5%) and Porto Alegre (2.1%). Income decreased in Salvador (3.0%) and was stable in Recife.

 

Own-account workers There was decline by 0.5% in relation to the result in April 2008. There was decrease of income in Recife (16.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (17.0%). Increase was observed in Salvador (6.2%), São Paulo (13.0%) and Porto Alegre (7.8%); there was stability in Belo Horizonte.

Analysis of the real income of workers by group of activity

 

Compared to March 2009, there was:

 

increase of the average income usually earned by workers in the following groups of activity: mining and quarrying industry, manufacturing industry and distribution of electricity, gas and water (1.2%); trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail trade of fuels (1.5%) and domestic services (0.7%).

 

decrease of the average income usually earned by workers of: construction (2.6%); services rendered to enterprises, rents, real estate activities, and financial mediation (2.7%); education, health, social services,

general government , defense and social security  (0.5%) and other services (1.5%).

 

Compared to April 2008, there was:

 

increase of the average income usually earned by workers of: mining and quarrying industry, manufacturing industry and distribution of electricity, gas and water (4.7%); trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail trade of fuels and other services (0.4%); services rendered to enterprises, rents, real estate activities, and financial mediation (4.5%); education, health, social services,

general government , defense and social security (5.3%); domestic services (6.3%) and other services (0.9%).

 

decrease of the average income usually earned by workers in construction (1.2%).

 


 

AVERAGE REAL HOUSEHOLD INCOME PER CAPITA

 

The survey estimated that in April 2009, for the group of six metropolitan areas surveyed, the real average household income per capita was R$ 860.51. This figure shows increase when compared to March (0.6%). Compared to April last year, there was recovery (3.4%).

 

In the analysis by area, compared to March, there was increase of income in the metropolitan areas of Recife (3.3%), Belo Horizonte (0.8%), Rio de Janeiro (0.9%) and São Paulo (0.7%). Decrease was observed in Salvador (3.3%) and stability, in Porto Alegre. Compared to April 2008, there was recovery in Salvador (6.7%), Belo Horizonte (1.3%), São Paulo (6.4%) and Porto Alegre (5.7%). There was retraction in Recife (3.2%) and in Rio de Janeiro (1.7%).

 

 


 

VOLUME OF REAL INCOME OF THE EMPLOYED POPULATION

 

The volume of real income received by the employed population was estimated as R$ 27.6 billion, considering the Monthly Employment Survey of April 2009 (reference month: March 2009), in the group of six Metropolitan Areas surveyed. There was stability in relation to February and increase compared to march 2008 (3.9%).

 

Compared to last February, there was decrease of the volume of real income in Salvador (2.0%), Belo Horizonte (0.5%) and São Paulo (1.3%). The opposite occurred in Recife (3.2%), Rio de Janeiro (1.9%) and Porto Alegre (2.6%). In relation to March 2008, there were increases in Salvador (8.6%), Belo Horizonte (2.4%), Rio de Janeiro (2.2%), São Paulo (5.5%) and Porto Alegre (3.1%). There was decline in Recife  (4.9%).
